Itzpapalotl is the Obsidian or Clawed Butterfly, the Feminine Warrior. She is often depicted as a skeletal being with jaguar claws and wings edged by obsidian knifes. One of the Tzitzimime, she is a powerful and dangerous star daemon. Together, with other female deities like the Cihuateteo, Tlaltecuhtli, Coatlicue, Citlalicue and Cihuacoatl, the Tzitzimime are protectors of midwives and women in labor.

Itzpapalotl rules over Tamoachan, the heaven where the gods created the human race. Tamoachan is the home for the victims of infant mortality. Here grows the Suckling Tree which bears 400,000 nipples. Here the children can comfortably regain strength for re-incarnation.

Itzpapalotl is the patron of the day Cozcuauhtli and Trecena 1 House in the Aztec calendar. The Trecena 1 House is one of the five western trecena dates dedicated to the cihuateteo, or women who had died in childbirth. Not only was Itzpapalotl considered one of the cihuateteo herself, but she was also one of the tzitzimime, star demons that threatened to devour people during solar eclipses.

As the legend goes, Itzpapalotl fell from heaven along with Tzitzimime and several other shapes such as scorpions and toads. Itzpapalotl wore an invisible cloak so that no one could see her. At some times, she was said to have dressed up like a lady of the Mexican Court, caking her face with white powder and lining her cheeks with strips of rubber. Her fingers tapered into the claws of a jaguar, and her toes into eagle's claws.

Hidden images are incorporated for the viewer to discover on her own. The original print was created at an astrologically favorable time with magickally appropriate aspects. The art works as a talisman to incorporate her shadow soul energies to awaken the dormant divine feminine within you.

Itzpapalotl stands for purfication or rejuvenation by sacrifice of that what is precious.

In the tonalpohualli, Itzpapalotl rules over day Cozcacuauhtli (knife) and over trecena 1-Calli (house).

It is, in and of itself, a unique and one of a kind work of art which will delight and inspire you for years to come.
