The relationship between women and serpents has been historically wrought with stories of caution and danger  As with our own sensuality and power, most of us have been taught only to fear snakes, with tales of Eve and apples and temptation ushering in the fall of man.

Looking deeper, we discover that the serpent mythos views the snake as an animal of wisdom, representing the dual nature of good vs. evil.. Much revered in ancient cultures, snakes served as fertility symbols,and the renewal of Nature. Snakes symbolized the umbilical cord, joining all humans to Mother Earth. The Great Goddess often employed serpents as her familiars - sometimes twining around her sacred staff - and they were worshiped as guardians of her mysteries of birth and regeneration.

Like women, serpents are intrinsically linked with both the power to heal and to destroy. The venom is associated with the chemicals of plants and herbs that have the power to either heal, poison or provide expanded consciousness (and even the elixir of life and immortality) through divine intoxication. Because of its herbal knowledge and entheogenic association, the snake was often considered one of the wisest animals, being (close to the) divine. Its divine aspect combined with its habitat in the earth between the roots of plants made it an animal connected to the afterlife and immortality. 

In magical constructs, serpents represent renewal, transformation, immortality and healing as well as sexual passion.
